Lubrication Oil Analysis: This is used to monitor the condition of the lubricant and the condition of the machine in association with vibration monitoring. Lube oil can degrade
by oxidation which produces acids, by the loss of corrosion inhibitants,
by the loss of viscosity - usually caused by fuel dilution or water
contamination - and by other contaminants and foreign bodies in the
oil.
By sampling oil on a regular basis we can check condition, i.e., viscosity, flash point and water content. Using Spectrographic Analysis we can determine chemical content, e.g., additives, wear metals and contaminants. From wear debris analysis, we can identify machine components that are being abraded and hence are deteriorating. This normally starts with the abrasion of asperities on a microscopic level on machined surfaces before more serious wear occurs. Early detection prevents serious problems.
